Ann Rebele

About Ann

Ann is a fiber artist designing and making contemporary art quilts. She creates most of her own fabrics by dying, painting or (using her original photographs) printing directly onto fabric. Ann also uses three-dimensional surface designs to add texture and interest to some of her work. She has had many solo shows and her work has been shown at many national and international juried exhibitions. She has recently had a piece accepted into Quilt National 2011. Ann has also taught workshops on the process of printing photographs onto fabric.

Artist's Statement

I have been working in fibers almost all of my life, from sewing as a child, to weaving classes in college, to teaching Adult Education courses in Macrame' in the '70s. However, it was my discovery of the "Art Quilt" in the late '80s, where I could combine my lifetime love of sewing and fabrics with my education in art and design, that led to my current passion and my most recent work.

I am inspired by other art forms, by nature, by color and... by the fabrics themselves. Once I come up with an idea for a quilt, I enjoy figuring out "how to" create that design in fabric almost as much as the construction itself. I like to experiment with different techniques, to create new and innovative pieces.

I have been experimenting with different forms of three-dimensional surface designs to add texture and interest to my quilts and use my own hand-dyed and hand-painted fabrics in the construction. I also use photographs, scanned, digitally manipulated and printed directly onto fabric to create original fabrics. Most recently, I have done a series of “4 Layered” quilts. I hand-draw, with pen and ink onto silk organza which is then layered over my hand-printed fabric.

Ultimately, my work is intended to invite the viewer to experience visual depth, textural interest and a curiosity to see the contemporary art quilt in a new dimension.
