Artist's Statement

Art and fabric have been intertwined in my life from my earliest memories when I used to play with my mother's scrap bag. I learned to hand embroidery when I was five and to use the sewing machine when I was nine. At the same time, I was always drawing, especially people. During high school and college, I continued my art education while also exploring a wide variety of needle arts including historical clothing and quiltmaking.

I made my first quilt in 1984 while I was expecting our first daughter, but I didn’t make another quilt again until 1991. In the early 1990’s I finally saw a quilt that featured a person, and I realized I could combine my love of art with my love of fabric. I have spent the last fifteen years experimenting with various ways to depict people using the textile medium. The quilts I make now are all one-of-a-kind, original designs using fabric, paints, inks, and other embellishments.

I studied Textile Art at San Diego State University (San Diego, California), and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from Wright State University (Dayton, Ohio).
