Artist's Statement

The process of art making is as important to me as the product. I am primarily a quilt artist. The tactile nature and physical processes of quilt making—dyeing, painting, cutting, and manipulating the fabric in the sewing machine—feed my creativity in a very unique manner.

I prefer to work spontaneously—without detailed sketches, patterns or templates— selecting fabrics, changing colors and altering shapes as the design unfolds itself. I only consider a quilt successful if its creation has been both challenging and joyful.

Like many domestic arts, sewing and quilt making are passed from one generation to the next. Fabric and thread have been part of the landscape throughout my life. My mother sewed for me when I was a little girl and then taught me to sew. I have sewn for my children and I have taught my daughter. I hope she will teach hers.
